Dr. Julien MEKKI
CNES
Julien Mekki earned a PhD in Applied Physics from Montpellier University in 2009, having conducted his doctoral research at CERN in the Physics department. His work focused on radiation monitoring for the LHC experiment, allowing him to develop a deep understanding on particle interaction with matter, radiation detection and electronics. Following his studies, he worked in various institutes as the University of Montpellier during 2 years where he was giving courses and was conducting research on radiation monitoring for high energy physics experiments and space applications. Then, he joined again CERN for 5 years in the Engineering Department, working on a project called R2E, standing for “Radiation to Electronics”, where he was responsible of radiation tests for the LHC. In this period he held leadership roles and managed significant projects as the conception and construction of a new radiation facility called CHARM, able to reproduce accelerators as well as space mixed field environments. In 2015, he joined CNES as radiation and components expert, while he took over the responsibility of the Environment and New Devices section since 2019. His team’s role is broad, ranging from measuring the space radiation environment using monitors, to design radiation hard and radiation tolerant electronics devices with industrial manufacturers, without forgetting radiation tests to evaluate their sensitivity.
